Guidance and Counselling Initiative Impact: 516 Learners Reached in Likoni Sub-County

Likoni Community Development Program (LICODEP) is a non-governmental organization operating within Mombasa County and Kwale County. It aims to create opportunities by leveraging available resources and empowering youth through knowledge sharing, skills development, mentorship, guidance, and counseling.

LICODEP has been providing guidance and counseling to educational institutions for a long time. During the second term of the academic calendar, which takes place from May to July 2024, our goal was to visit 10 primary public schools within the Likoni sub-county and conduct group counseling sessions for students. Despite the busy school schedule, we are pleased to report that we were able to visit 60% of the schools and reach 516 students( male 251 and female 265).

During the sessions held in Jamvi la Wageni, Puma primary, Shika-adabu primary, Likoni Muslim, Mishi Mboko primary, and Mweza primary schools various topics were discussed based on the specific needs of each school. The following were common topics raised as per each school’s request and helped the student by sharing the information.

  • Academic Performance: We emphasize the significance of academic performance by assisting students in recognizing the value of striving for excellence in their studies. Our approach includes the development of personalized timetables, which serve as effective tools for managing their time. These timetables enable students to balance their academic responsibilities with personal commitments, fostering a structured environment conducive to educational achievement and personal growth.
  • Juvenile gang groups pose significant risks to young individuals, potentially leading to detrimental life choices, including school dropout. Educating students about the serious implications of associating with such groups is imperative, as involvement can hinder their academic progress and personal development. By fostering awareness and providing guidance, we aim to empower students to make informed decisions that prioritize their education and prospects.
